Wilton's® Star - Red Jonaprince Select

ORIGIN:

Mutant of Jonagold.

SYNONYMS:

Red Jonaprince, Wilton's® Red Jonaprince, Red Prince.

TREE:

The tree grows rather fast and makes a loose, spreading crown. The variety is recommended for cultivation on dwarf rootstocks.

FLOWERING AND POLLINATION:

It blooms about 2-3 days before Golden Delicious Reiders. Red Jonaprince, as all varieties from Jonagold group, is triploid, that means it is not a pollinator for other varieties. The best pollinators for it are Elstar, Gala, Pinova, Topaz and Braeburn.

FRUIT:

The fruit is distinctive because color comes in an early stadium [ovaries are red in June]and the fruit reaches deep red color. The fruit is large or very large (average size - 75-85 mm), spherical-conical. The skin is shiny and smooth in 95 to 100% covered with a heavy, deep red erubescence, even from the shady side of the tree and in the middle of the crown. The fruit of Red Jonaprince has a higher sugar content and firmness than other Jonagolds. Red Jonaprince has a high level of anthocyanins..

FRUCTIFICATION:

Red Jonaprince bears fruit early; yields annually, stable and abundant. It is more stable in yield and quality/colour of the fruit than initial variety - Red Jonaprince.

TASTE:

The flesh is highly dense, very hard, creamy-yellow, sweet-sour, aromatic and very tasty.

HARVEST MATURITY:

In comparison with standard varieties from the group of Jonagold the harvest maturity is very early, (third week of September). Please note that early coloration may tempt to harvest too early, which adversely affects the delicious taste and storage of the fruit. An important advantage is also the possibility of one-stage harvest of the fruit. Firmness at harvest is approx. 8,5 kg / cm².

STORAGE:

The fruit due to the extremely firm, fine-grained flesh stays esculent and has appetizing appearance for a long time. The experiments in the United States in May 1998 showed that the firmness of the fruit was 6,5 kg/cm² when it was taken from the cold and for two weeks was stored at a temperature of 15 °C . Because of its excellent storage characteristics it is simply an ideal export variety.
